Unfortunately, these can often be negative. This can be half the issue for people with introverted qualities, as you can often end up feeling misunderstood by your more extroverted colleagues. Here’s a roundup of some of the misconceptions around what introverts are like, the myth busters to put them straight and how you, as an introvert, can benefit your employer with these myth-busting qualities. 1. Introverts are shy and don’t say much. How many times have you heard colleagues tell you ‘oh, you’re so quiet’ or ‘I didn’t notice you were there’ because you’re so quiet’? Sound familiar? It is unfortunate that many people associate being quiet with being shy or unsure, when the two are entirely different things. Shy people tend to have less confidence and may be reluctant to go out in a group or take a while to work up the courage to express their opinion â€" yes, this will make them quiet. Many introverts also like to get their stimulation and excitement through hobbies, reading or in their own company in the comfort of their own surroundings. While it may appear that introverted people don’t like to socialize because they don’t talk as much in the office, it may actually be because they become more easily over-stimulated than other people. Introverts Like to be Alone. Extroverts, on the other hand, have a lower ‘arousal’ level, meaning they have more of a need to seek stimulation from the outside world to achieve the same levels. There seems to be some common belief that those in a senior or managerial role must be loud, outspoken or immediately decisive to be effective at running a team. 4 Smart Reasons to Take AP Classes Improving Academic Performance Taking AP classes is almost never a bad idea. While, some AP classes require you to have a particular aptitude in a subject (for example, you can’t just decide to take AP BC Calculus without taking all the pre-requisites), other AP classes, like AP US History, don’t really have pre-requisites at most high schools â€" you simply can elect to take AP US History. The list of AP classes offered by the College Board, by my count, stands at 30. Furthermore, of those 30, I count 13 that probably don’t have too many pre-requisites. Sure, AP classes are harder (sometimes much harder), and require more work, and therefore there are some reasons to decide against taking them. But, we believe that there are three major reasons to take AP classes which overpower any downsides. Earn College Credit AP classes earn you college credit. Armed with that college credit, you may not have to take a given course in college. At my alma mater, Indiana University, it costs an out of state student about $3,000 per course. An AP test costs $89.00. I’m not making this up. Boost Your GPA The second reason to take an AP class is that, generally, it actually provides you with the opportunity to boost your GPA. If you are on a 4-point scale in high school, meaning straight A's = 4.0, often times an AP class will count as 5, so you have the opportunity to throw an average of 5 into the mix, boosting your GPA. Sure, the class may be harder, but at the end of the day, the potential is certainly there to give your GPA a boost. Improve Your College Applications The third reason to take an AP class is that you can improve your college applications by showing colleges that you have taken some of the most difficult classes available. The difficulty of these classes suggests that you are both intelligent and have key critical thinking skills. It also shows a willingness to push yourself. Learn Something Completely New The fourth and final reason to take AP classes is that they provide the opportunity to try something new. For example, high schools don't have an economics track, where you are taking economics freshman, sophomore and junior year. There aren’t too many Psychology courses either. These are two subject to which you probably haven’t been exposed, but you may learn that you really enjoy them (vs. math, physics, biology, etc. which you’ve been taking for years). Tips on How to Praise Correctly Most school teachers, tutors and parents agree on the importance of praising children. Praise can be an immensely important motivator driving a child’s performance, whether the goal be a passing a common entrance exam, good GCSEs, or just encouraging children to develop their talents and fulfil their potential. But are we giving the right sort of praise? One of our tutors, Stephanie S, is an Educational and Child Psychologist. She explains how to use praise in the best way. The importance of praise is now an old phenomenon; the notion has been around long enough for people to be  sceptical  about its benefits. It seems  that we are beginning to underestimate its value and some even think it be may detrimental - I regularly get asked questions along the lines of: “But won’t praising my children spoil them or fill them with false hopes?” From previous research we know that praising children for their efforts rather than their inherent traits has a positive impact on their all-round development (Kamins and Dweck, 1999; Mueller Dweck, 1998). What this means is that we should praise children using “process praise” â€" i.e. focusing on their efforts, actions and strategies to completing a task, rather than our view of an inherent ability (“you’re so smart”, “you are good”) that helped them complete it. This idea is backed by a new study by Carol Dweck and Elizabeth Gunderson, who monitored how parents praise their young children in real-life situations, and to note the impact of this on children 5 years later. The key finding was that the more parents praised pre-school children for effort (known as process praise, as in “good job”), the more likely it was that those children had an “incremental attitude” towards intelligence. For example, such children tended to agree that people can get smarter if they try harder, and disagree with the idea that a naughty child will always be naughty. From other research we know that such a mind-set has a positive impact on a child’s life and academic success. So how should we praise a child? “You found a good way to do that!” “You worked really hard at that!” as opposed to “you are so smart” “That was some really good addition” “Very nice handwriting” as opposed to “you have neat handwriting” “You did a good job drawing” as opposed to “you are a good drawer” “Good job counting” as opposed to “you’re a good counter” “You’re trying your best” as opposed to “good boy” What if they make a mess of the end product, and there is nothing to praise?
